Most lost accounts are not lost to hackers. They are lost to a reused password, a .watch gateway, or a vendor that looked real for exactly as long as it took to take the money. The habits below are short to read and shorter to follow.
A clean profile for onions
Use Tor Browser for .onions and keep it that way. Extensions are the first thing to go: each one is a small program that can phone home, and a phone home breaks the circuit’s anonymity and slows the load at the same time. If a site tells you it “needs an extension to work”, read that as a site telling you what it needs to do to you.
If your network blocks Tor
Some ISPs and some countries filter the Tor entrance. A bridge relay is a Tor node that does not announce itself, and Tor Browser has a field for the bridge address under Settings, Advanced. With a bridge, the connection builds the same way as always; the difference is that your network cannot easily see which nodes you are talking to.
Money goes through escrow
The deposit is sent to an escrow address, never to a vendor’s wallet, and the market releases it to the vendor when the order conditions are met. Before you confirm a payment, read the release conditions once, the whole line, and check the amount against the order, not against your memory of the price.
Vendor rep is the product
Read the rep history and the recent ratings, not the headline number. Four hundred perfect ratings collected in one week is a rebrand, and the previous name is usually in the oldest reviews. For a first order with a new vendor, a small order is a feature: it prices the risk.
