Mirror pages love the green dot. “Online, 99.2%, last checked 16:42.” The dot is real. It is also about as useful as a weather report written about a different city.
What the dot actually measured
A probe hits one endpoint, from one machine, over a circuit that was built minutes before you saw the result, on a network that is not yours. Your circuit is built fresh when you click, through three different random relays, and a page can be fully alive for the probe and unreachable for you in the same minute. Both are true. The dot was never about you.
The timestamp makes it worse instead of better. “Last checked 4 minutes ago” tells you exactly how stale the answer is, which is the whole point of checking and the opposite of what a badge is for. A badge that updates every five minutes and a badge that never update are the same statement: the network from over there worked, recently, for somebody else.
The queue complicates it further
The market’s entrance is a queue, so even a fully alive mirror answers slowly at peak hours. A probe that gives up after ten seconds reads that as down and paints the dot red on your behalf, while the queue behind it is perfectly healthy and only short on patience. Half of “the market is down” in any group chat is a probe that timed out.
What survives contact with your circuit
An uptime figure beside an onion describes one machine on one circuit at a moment that has passed. Your circuit is built fresh when you click, so the only test that counts is opening the address: paste it, and see whether the queue page loads. If the queue loads, the market is up for you, and no number on any page could have told you that more accurately. That is why no live-check figures are published on these pages. The test is one paste away, in the address block, and it takes less time than the dot would have taken to mislead.
